Introduction to Data Migration
This document is intended to be used as a reference guide to Data Migration tool. Data Migration is the process of transferring data from one storage system to another and also between data formats and applications. It also involves data transfers between different data formats and applications.
The data migration process also includes data preparation, extraction and transformation. It is usually conducted when introducing new systems and processes in an organisation.
The data migration process involves three essential steps:
- Data Extraction: Also referred as data collection, this first step involves collecting data from its source systems, file systems, legacy applications and marketing systems. It can be a time consuming process, hence there is a need of data extraction tool which helps automate the process, improve agility and reduces the risk of errors.
- Data Transformation: This step involves transforming the data to the format needed for the landing system. Data transformation may be:
- Destructive: which may involve deleting fields and records.
- Constructive: which may involve adding new fields and replicating data.
- Aesthetic: which may entail changing and standardizing field names to improve readability.
- Joining and linking data from various sources.
- Validating data: Data undergoes testing against standardized guidelines, and data gets rejected if it does not fulfil such requirements.
- Data Loading: This last step entails transferring data to its final destinations systems. Data loading may occur once or incrementally in batches. Batch Loading helps to check and validate the data for inconsistencies.
The Temenos Transact Data Migration tool is used during the pre-live in any site implementations. It broadly covers the following functionalities.
- Validations done on data, prior to migration.
- The Data Migration tool accepts data in any layout and format.
- It requires less manual intervention during mapping of the incoming file to Temenos Transact applications and this is a onetime set up.
- Perform all Temenos Transact validations and also includes any special cases of validations which may be site specific.
- Supports scaling, using the multi-threading capabilities of
TSA.SERVICE
. - Stop or Resume options in case the server, Temenos Transact or database connectivity is lost in the middle of the load. The operation will be resumed from where it was paused.
- Exception handling is done to report any erroneous data present in the data file. This report also includes detailed description of the error that is raised during the load.
- Supports the sequential load of data in the multithread. For example, in the Drawings application where the data is to be loaded in the sequence of the Id.
- Supports the read replacement for the multi company.
